Anatomy of a Story:
Jonathan Katz & the State of the Union Rebuttal
On March 8th, 2024 a TikTok video about the previous night’s State of the Union rebuttal from experienced independent news reporter Jonathan M. Katz went viral and created an important news cycle about truth in politics in the United States.

In his reporting Jonathan made factual points about obvious lies in Alabama junior senator Katie Britt’s speech the night prior, the most important of which were deliberate and false implications that sexual violence suffered by an immigrant woman as a child in Mexico had supposedly occurred more recently in the United States.
The fact that such an important story, in an election year, needed to be broken by an independent journalist with a much shorter reach outside the resources and structures of traditional media is bad news for everyone desiring to be an informed citizen and voter and unhealthy for democracy.
Thank you, Jonathan, for your dedication to your craft.
